Come Get Your High Five
"Great Story, Grandpa!" Circle Tomorrow at Grand Central Coffee Shop

Maybe your family is like mine. We live and die by the calendar. If it's not in the calendar, it does not exist.
In my kitchen, we have a very prominent calendar hanging on to dear life by a handful of little magnets. There, I write everything that needs to happen for our house to function. My daughters have seen this all their lives, and recently, Jovie got a calendar from her Highlights magazine subscription.
Once she got the calendar, she ran to her room and found a place for it. Then, she asked us for help hanging it.
A few days ago, she asked, "What does the five on this day mean?"
I didn't know what she was talking about, so when I looked at it, I saw a hand with five fingers stretched out.
That's how I learned that this Thursday was National High Five Day.
I LOOOOOOVE high fives. It is the single greatest American cultural export!
When I went looking to confirm that there was an actual day to celebrate this gesture of awesomeness, I found the following excerpt on the website Days of the Year:
“In 1977, Los Angeles Dodgers teammates Dusty Baker and Glenn Burke shared the first recorded high five.
The moment followed Baker's home run, making it a symbol of celebration. Today, high fives are iconic in sports, signaling camaraderie and success.”
And then I read this,
“Rumor has it that these two Los Angeles Dodgers baseball players were celebrating a particularly important success in a game on October 2, and it just seemed appropriate to clap their hands together over their heads.”
Clap their hands together over their heads?
Just amazing. Words somehow managed to kill the vibe of an incredible human act.
Nevertheless, come tomorrow and get your high five.
I can't wait to see you and hear all your stories about the theme of the month, "And then, I saw it!"
The spirit of the circle is to support and deeply listen to stories in an intimate setting.
If you can make those stories funny, well, then that's a plus! :)
See you tomorrow.
